Having taken up the Get Certified Challenge, I checked out whether Fairtrade tea and coffee are available where I work. Unbelievably, despite our having 3 coffee outlets, none of them stock Fairtrade. In fact, when I asked, I was met with blank stares.
I decided that I would raid the tea and coffee available in the tearoom cupboards, but unfortunately they aren’t Fairtrade either!
So, before I go into caffeine withdrawal and fall into a coma at my desk, I shall be buying some Fairtrade individual coffee filters from the Marks and Spencers on the way! I let you know what they are like…

My worry about the individual filters would be the amount of packaging/waste they use. Will be interesting to see what you think. Maybe you will have to lug a cafetiere on the back of you bike instead??…oh and some milk…some coffee…a mug…Hmmmm…maybe not?
Did you see the article in todays Metro about Fair trade cola? Its Cola made from fair trade sugar from a coop in a village in Malawi. Dont think they will be able to cope with the demands Coco cola would place on them and therefore get widespread distribution but they have produced enough to trial in dozens of UK universities. On the coffee front, I have my own cafetiere on my desk and can buy fair trade coffee easily from two tesco Metros a short walk away from my office. As I am pregnant I only buy decaf and the decaf I buy has been certified by the Rainforest alliance which as well as guaranteeing that farmers follow sound agricultural practices to protect the environment also ensures workers get just wages, dignified working conditions and access to education and health care. Although its not labelled as fair trade, those principles are close to it.
